Hamilton-born photographer Margaret Watkins made ground-breaking artistic contributions that remained unrecognized for many decades before and after her death. However, to use this fact to construe her life as a tragedy would be an error, according to Mary O’Connor, Professor Emeritus English and Cultural Studies at McMaster University.
O’Connor has devoted a significant portion of her interdisciplinary academic career researching Watkins’ life and work, and during this animated in-person discussion with Senior Curator Tobi Bruce, she will reflect on Watkins’ sense of humour, perseverance, and lifelong immersion in music, art and culture—as a means to better unpack her life and photography.
