Guest curated by Yan Zhou – read the curatorial essay here
For decades, China and the Global South have been definably impacted by smog, to the point of ecological destitution and human suffering. Guest curator Yan Zhou organized several artist exchange trips between Canada and her native China over the past few years, to foster the creation of new works that respond to the current climate crisis, specifically focusing on smog as a symbol and a symptom of our world in the time of climate emergency.
Fifteen featured artists explore the issues through remarkable and responsive materials, including drawing, painting, sculpture, installation and video.
Artists include: Jean-François Côté (Québec City), Alexandre David (Montréal), Dong Dawei (Beijing), Xin He (Toronto), Ren Jie (Guangzhou), Gao Jie (Shanghai), Hua Jin (Montréal), Yam Lau (Toronto), Mireille Lavoie (Montréal), Li Ming (Beijing) , Zhang Qingfan (Beijing), Xu Tan (Guangdong), Yang Xiao and Chen Sisi (Guangzhou) and Zhang Xiao (Chengdu).
